Bio-PBS is bio-based and compostable and is made from bio-succinic acid, which will increasingly be extracted from renewable sources in the future. Bio-PBS is currently mainly used in a natural fibre composite for car interiors. Multiple partnerships have been established to create a fully integrated supply chain for bio-PBS. The goal is to develop a 100% bio-based plastic that can be used in mass production for not only car interior parts (such as door panels, decorative strips, etc.), is also applicable in packaging materials for food such as cheese, meat, etc. Wageningen University & Research has done a lot of research on the production of foams with PBS, paving the way for commercial applications of this foam, for example in packaging or as a building material.
What’s Next
Next steps are a more cost-effective production and the scale-up of PBS. We’re also looking at ways to tailor the characteristics of the material to specific applications.
