Together with market parties, Wageningen University & Research studies the opportunities for sustainable asphalt. Conventional asphalt is produced by using bitumen as the binder. However, in this innovative asphalt mixture bitumen is completely substituted by biobased ingredients. This results in a much more sustainable product. The asphalt binder is produced by blending biobased side streams from various industries and the product is produced by using a warm asphalt temperature regime. Major advatanges: it is available in large quantities and the necessary technology is scalable to industrial scale without large necessary investments.
What’s next
This product has been demonstrated in demo roads. During the coming years these demo roads will be monitored and more demonstration roads can be realised. After promising results, the expectation that market parties will produce this asphalt on a large scale.
